How do I make everything in a photo black and white except for a specific object?

I see people with their awesome photos of everything black and white, but one thing its original color and makes it really stand out. How do I do that? Do I need a special photo altering program or what?

Photobucket…just create an account then upload the pic…then click on edit and then it should say color splash…:D…ur good to go…:D…
